Get to know me

Dr. José Angel Mendoza Herrera, C. Psych.

I am a Clinical Psychologist specializing in adult mental health. My practice focuses on evidence-based interventions for adults, integrating schema therapy, humanistic/existential and third-wave cognitive-behavioural approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I provide services in French, English, and Spanish, and I am committed to culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and inclusive care. I am currently registered to practice in Québec with the Ordre des psychologues du Québec and am in the process of obtaining Ontario’s licence of practice.

Professional Background
Dr. Mendoza’s clinical training (2016–2020) spanned multiple therapeutic schools and settings, including extensive psychodynamic training at the Université de Sherbrooke. He also developed an interest in humanistic/existential and contextual therapies, which he has continued to explore through his involvement with the Association for Contextual and Behavioural Science (ACBS) since 2018.

He has extensive experience providing individual and group therapy across public, private, and research settings. Between 2019 and 2021, he worked at the Clinique de psychologie et de neuropsychologie de Montréal (CPNM), supporting adults with diverse profiles, including those with learning and attention deficits, as well as those with high intellectual potential, to improve their emotional well-being, self-esteem, and daily functioning. From 2022 to 2024, he worked in an interdisciplinary outpatient clinic at Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke, supporting adults with psychological and physical comorbidities, including trauma and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Earlier, he provided therapy and case support at the Université de Sherbrooke (SPO), conducted research-related assessments on anxiety and worry, and gained experience in crisis intervention as well as group programs.

Prior Training and Clinical Interests
Dr. Mendoza has completed specialized training in contextual and behavioural therapies, including a Diploma in Contextual Behavioural Psychotherapies (Fundación CIPCO, Argentina) and ACT-focused treatment of rumination and worry (Fundación Konrad-Lorenz, Colombia). He has also pursued professional development in trauma, brief psychodynamic therapy, and personality disorders. More recently, he has participated in clinical research projects providing online therapy for adults with OCD, applying Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Dr. Mendoza’s clinical interests include obsessive-compulsive phenomena and trauma. He plans to pursue training in validated, complementary approaches, such as Inference-Based Therapy (IBT), and in trauma-focused interventions, including EMDR, to further expand his repertoire of evidence-based treatments for compulsive behaviours, obsessive thoughts, and trauma-related difficulties. These experiences reflect his commitment to continuous education in evidence-based interventions alongside a nuanced understanding of individual differences.

Teaching and Research Interests
Dr. Mendoza has been actively involved in teaching at the Université de Sherbrooke, assisting courses in psychopathology and personal development among undergraduates. In these roles, he fostered collaborative learning, guided students through practical exercises and case discussions, and encouraged reflection on both cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic perspectives on psychological suffering. His doctoral research focused on the momentary assessment of repetitive negative thinking - rumination and worry - and its relationship to emotional (anxiety, depression) and behavioural regulation (committed actions) during the antenatal period. He is particularly interested in how these repetitive thought processes contribute to mental health challenges and in applying evidence-based interventions to support meaningful behavioural change and well-being.

On a personal Note

Who am I?

I am originally from Mexico and immigrated to Québec with my family in 2008. After a few years learning French and integrating into Canadian society, I pursued my post-secondary studies in psychology in Montréal and Sherbrooke, where I developed a passion for cultural diversity, woodworking, biking, and teaching.

Moving to the Outaouais region was motivated by a desire to live in a multilingual environment, where I could provide clinical services in French, English, and Spanish. As a former asylum seeker, I have a particular interest in supporting individuals navigating immigration and acculturation stress, as well as those experiencing diverse life cycle changes and transitions, with a perspective on grief and loss as important processes of integration and growth. I am also deeply committed to working with neurodivergent individuals, including those with learning, attention, or cognitive differences, to support their psychological well-being and personal growth.

In my clinical practice, I strive to create a safe, judgment-free space where clients can authentically explore their challenges and strengths. Known for a warm and calm approach, I work collaboratively to help clients clarify values, build psychological flexibility, and take meaningful, values-aligned action. Beyond clinical work, I am committed to continuous learning, research, and contributing to creating collaborative communities.
